iPad applications for kids with aspergers, autism and other ASD conditions

Kylie’s list of iPad apps:
So I am Kylie, a mum of a child with Aspergers.  Here is my list of apps on the iPad that I think are good.  They are in no particular order.  The descriptions underneath come from the iTunes store.  My personal comments are asterisked and in light blue.  Please be careful of getting free apps as a lot of them use advertising banners and I have been caught with a couple having dodgy photos of women in them.  I have not played each of these apps extensively and the list is only meant to be a guide of where to start J  My son has a special interest in Trains, so there are a lot of apps relating to that on here.   I would love to hear of apps you have found useful.  Email me  Also when I find new applications that I find useful, I will post them on this blog, so please sign up and follow.  I look forward to reading your comments and finding out what apps you have found to be useful.  Feel free to post suggestions. They are appreciated.

Autism Apps is simply a comprehensive list of apps that are being used with and by people diagnosed with autism, Down syndrome and other special needs. It also includes links to any available information that can be found for each app. The Apps are also separated into over 30 categories, and the descriptions are all searchable, so any type of app is easy to find and download.

Autism Apps was created as a resource for anyone looking for apps for people diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome or other special need. Many people are discovering the many uses that iPads, iPhones and iPod touches can have as tools and resources for people diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome or other disability. Though there are a multitude of apps in the app store that many people diagnosed with autism, Down syndrome or another special need use and enjoy, they can be difficult to find.

Autism Apps links to extensive reviews of the apps written by parents, specialists, and other users usually from first-hand experience. Autism Apps also has links to video demonstrations or video reviews of the apps when they are available.
The ‘Autism Xpress’has been created to help promote greater awareness about autism spectrum disorders. It is designed to encourage people with autism to recognizes and express their emotions through its fun and easy to use interface.

Help your young learner master the most frequently used words in the English language!

A child who can recognize just 8 of 10 words in a sentence can typically understand its meaning! "Sight words" often cannot be illustrated via simple pictures or sounded out according to regular phonetic decoding rules, thus they need to be learned and recognized "on sight". Our SightWords app is a handy way to encourage a child's mastery of their sight words either as part of a structured reading program at school, or as an impromptu study session when standing in line at the grocery store.
**I especially like this one as it has the Australia words lists, including the M100W ones my son’s school uses.

Tracing Paper is a simple yet elegant universal application for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch that helps you practice and improve your sketching skills by giving you a blank translucent canvas with a clean and simple grid on which you can trace anything you wish as often as you like. I believe it will be great for anyone who wants to learn how to draw or for kids that just want to play around!

After choosing a photo from your library you can adjust its size, location and rotation under the canvas using your fingers to pinch to zoom and one finger to drag it around, then you simply trace and shade whatever you wish using your finger. If you make a mistake simply choose the eraser tool and erase (also, you can use the eraser creatively to add details in ways that are different from simply drawing), or if you want more accuracy than that, there is undo/redo support for up to 8 actions. For those hard to see details zoom or pan the canvas in for further detail by simply pinching the canvas or using two fingers and dragging to move! For those details where we want the colors to really pop there is now support for coloring and changing the pencil size to draw larger or smaller details as needed! The grid is fully customizable so you can change its size, translucency or even turn it off!

**I created *.jpg files of the alphabet and I then use this program so my son can load the letter he wants and practice tracing over it!

The automatic tracking and reporting feature makes it easy for parents, teachers and occupational therapists to identity time on task and progress. You can email the progress reports right from the app itself.

The Everyday Social Skills HD application is designed to teach and reinforce basic social skills critical for independent living and is optimized for the iPad. It provides easy-to-understand information taht allows users to become more capable of functioning independently at work, at home, and in the community.
Smiling can be difficult for many children. Some children – particularly those with autism spectrum issues – may feel uncomfortable and resist smiling when it is appropriate. They may also smile when it is inappropriate to do so. Some children also have difficulty interpreting the social cues that signal when a smile is or is not appropriate. "Smile at Me" provides quick, repeated practice in interpreting these social cues, and rewards children for practicing appropriate smiling.
Do you have a young train lover who needs practice with eye contact? Look in My Eyes: Steam Train allows young learners to practice eye contact while earning rides as the engineers of their own steam trains!

This is not a competitive game, there are no points to win or lose. Instead, it is an engaging virtual world to play in and explore! Young engineers can play with their train from a distance, adjusting signal flags, lights, whistles, and bells while making fun deliveries to exotic locations such as the Great Wall of China, Mt. Rushmore, the pyramids of Egypt and others.

Or they can go inside the engine room to control the throttle, brakes, whistle, bell and more! Young engineers can go back to the tender in order to fill up with coal and water. Then they can turn to the front and shovel coal into the firebox, adjust their steam pressure and water level, try different real train whistles, and shoo cows off the tracks!

A noncompetitive and highly engaging activity to entertain a budding train engineer!
**This is the same as the Look in my eyes steam train”, but with the “look in my eyes” bit removed.
Do you have a young train lover in the house? Steam Train: Activity Center allows young people to become the engineers of their own steam trains!

Eye contact is an important social skill that some children find challenging. “Look in My Eyes” helps them practice this skill - while earning fun rewards and playing creatively. It was designed for children on the autism spectrum - especially those with Asperger’s Syndrome - but any child who has difficulties with eye contact may benefit from playing.

The game rewards players for quickly focusing in on a person’s eyes. Through repeated practice we attempt to develop a habit that families can transfer to real life settings as they remind children to use the skills they have practiced in the game.

How do you play? Children look at a series of faces, and need to focus on the eyes quickly in order to answer correctly and earn points. The game makes repeated practice fun as children use the points they earn to buy items for their own virtual world - in this case a car repair shop, complete with 5 different rooms. Numerous items - such as cars, repair tools, and other auto products - can be rotated, enlarged, shrunk and positioned to create cool scenes. Kids can take snapshots of their creations and view them in the game's Photo Gallery, the iPhone’s Camera Roll or the iPod touch’s Saved Photos.

The game’s unique reward system grew out of our decades of classroom teaching experience, observing what motivates young learners. We have combined that experience with our extensive training in best education practices and our many years of close personal relationships with children who have Asperger’s Syndrome and autism to create a social skills game we hope will benefit your child

Does your creative child crave more imaginative games? … OR… Does your child need more practice with creativity? …
Imagination and creativity. As experienced classroom teachers, we believe creative, open-ended play is an essential part of learning. Some children are already strong in creativity and need an iPhone/iPod touch game that will exercise their imagination instead of just their thumbs. “Scene Builder” is for them.

Other children need more practice being creative and flexible. We know that some children struggle with imaginary play – whether they’re on the spectrum or not. “Scene Builder” gives these children a chance to practice creative and imaginary play – instead of just trying to beat the next level.

“Scene Builder” came out of our years of observing children – some gifted, some on the spectrum, some both – and noting that many preferred games that involved creating and building rather than defeating enemies. Please let us know how your child responds to the game - and what you think!

“Scene Builder – Car Mechanic” allows kids to create scenes in five different rooms of a virtual Mechanic’s shop. Children select props from a warehouse, then rotate, enlarge or shrink them, and position them to create cool scenes. Kids can take snapshots of their creations and view them in the game's Photo Gallery or on the iPhone's camera roll. At the end of the session, the player's current game is saved so he can continue where he left off next time. A creative and imaginative way to spend some spare time!
