Australian Touch and Write: Victorian Cursive

"Brilliant - fun way to learn Victorian cursive. I have been waiting for an app like this - a fun way teach Victorian Modern Cursive, an app my special needs son enjoys playing with and learns as he goes. He can even use a stylus to draw the letters and build the muscle memory in his hand, that can later be transferred to writing with a pencil or pen. All children will benefit from this app, presenting learning writing in an exciting format, great guides to help learn where to start and stop letters, and great celebration pages to keep them interested and rewarded. I like that you can use the word lists or make your own so then the app grows with the child into writing full words, not just letters. I think I will be trying it out with my son's spelling lists too and double benefit - writing and spelling. It is also great to be able to teach Aussie formats such as Victorian Modern Cursive.... Almost all the apps I have tried have been US based. Thanks FizzBrain! You are a star!" - kr4177, customer review

With nearly 300 definitions, our 'Maths A to Z' will help you to understand what is happening in your child's classroom. Each word has an easy-to-understand definition based on the current school curriculum, with graphic illustrations, help sheets and 'how to' videos to help you support your child.

Our 'Spelling Bee game' provides hours of spelling fun for children of all ages. The Spelling Bee game is powered by words from Australia's national dictionary, the Macquarie Dictionary (Macquarie Dictionary Data (c) Macquarie Dictionary Publishers, 2012). There are three levels of difficulty and a leader board to track progress and improvement. Children can even create their own games for their spelling homework.

If your child needs help with their times tables, then the 'Maths Monkey Times Tables' challenge is sure to be a winner. Your child has to get the most number of correct answers before all of the bananas fall. Children can choose which number they want to practise and there is also a random game to keep them guessing.

Does your child have an assignment due tomorrow and you don't know where to start? We have prepared some 'assignment starters' for common classroom topics and themes to point you in the right direction.

Autism iHelp – Play

Autism iHelp is a vocabulary teaching aid developed by parents of a child with Autism and a speech-language pathologist. Autism iHelp was inspired by the need for specific language intervention tools for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder focusing on their unique strengths and difficulty with expressive vocabulary.
Autism iHelp is an invaluable tool for your child with Autism when those first words just don’t come. The colorful real-life photos are presented in an easy-to-label format.
This app includes several features:
24 real world photos; it has been proven that children with Autism respond best to photos as opposed to illustrations and are very visual learners.
- 24 photos chosen based on established expressive language milestones are divided into three sub groups of eight. With 24 photos, over-stimulation is less likely which increases the child’s ability to grasp the concepts at an appropriate rate.

- Labels of all photos with the option to turn off the label as some children with Autism may be more drawn to the written word. At the end of eight images there will be an option to try again, aiding in repetition and drill required for learning new words.

- Option to have images presented at random or not, to additionally aid in generalization and concrete learning.
When audio is selected, two voice options are available—male and female. This provides the most realistic experience for your child. There will also be an option to turn the audio off, which would prompt your child to use his or her own voice and spontaneously label the learned words.

- This app also includes two Learning Enhancement activities. These learning activities are presented in a game-like format, and require the child to either match a picture to word given multiple word choices or choose the word that goes with the picture in a field of 4 pictures. These games check retention of the learned vocabulary and integrate auditory and visual memory. Additionally, you are able to track your child's gains through progress reports that average the last 3 performances of each learning enhancement activity.

A work system, an element of structured teaching, is defined by Division TEACCH as a systematic and organized presentation of tasks and materials that visually communicates at least four pieces of information to the student (Schopler, Mesibov, & Hearsey, 1995):

1. The tasks/steps the student is supposed to do.
2. What is the nature of the task?
3. How many tasks/steps there are to be completed.
4. How the student knows he/she is finished.

The student should independently recognize the end of the activity through the structure within the task, use of a finished box, timer, or other visual cue such as a stop sign.

What to do when he/she is finished. Indicate next scheduled activity. May need to use a highly desired item/activity to increase motivation, though often being “finished” is motivating enough.

While a picture schedule directs a student WHERE TO GO, a work system instructs a student on WHAT TO DO once they arrive in the scheduled area.

In our own lives, a daily planner may direct us to the grocery store (our schedule), while our grocery list informs us what to do/buy while at the store (our work system).

A work system provides all of the required information without adult prompting and teaches the student to attend to visual cues (rather than verbal directives) when completing a task.

A work system assists in organizing a student with ASD by providing a systematic work routine—working from left-to-right or top-to-bottom. Students do not have to plan where to begin or how to proceed.

Work systems can be used with any type of task or activity (e.g., academic, self-help, leisure), across settings (e.g., independent work area, cafeteria, place of employment), and for individuals at all functioning levels (e.g., systems can range from concrete to abstract).

Geography Tutor - Australian States and Cities Premium Edition

Over a year in the making "Memory-Learners" has pioneered a new and incredibly effective way for children aged 2-12 to learn.

It's been long known that repetition is the best method for learning certain types of information. Committing something to memory often seems like a chore. What we've done is add a game based scenario to this style of learning that not only makes it more entertaining to commit things to memory it opens the memory part of your brain and lets the information sink in like no other learning technique available.

Read&Write: Letters, Sounds and Combinations

Read&Write: Letters, Sounds and Combinations provides a hands-on approach for learning how to recognize letters, pronounce letter sounds and practice blend and digraph combinations. Each letter, sound or combination has an illustration that makes a sound when touched. Practice tracing letters with a finger to increase memory retention and develop fine motor skills.

Choose between teaching mode(designed for teachers to show students) and student mode(designed for students to test their knowledge). Each mode can be activated by tapping the teacher/student icon.

Geared for Pre-K or English as a Second Language (ESL)

ABC MAGIC PHONICS

This app will help your child learn the sounds of the letters of the alphabet, which are necessary for reading. Learning the sounds of the letters gives your child the tools for reading and helps them become better readers. A matching phonetic photo image is matched with each letter to help your child learn the sound of each letter.

LOWERCASE

Don’t waste your child’s time teaching them capital letters, which represent only 5% of the words in printed text. 95% of the printed word in books and periodicals is in lowercase letters. Give your child the smart start of learning lowercase letters first.

LETTER SOUNDS

The sounds of the letters are what give children the tools for reading.

Just like counting skills are the foundations of addition, knowing the sounds of the letters are the foundations of reading. Contrary to popular belief and the current educational paradigm, teaching your child the names of the letters DOES NOT help your child learn how to read! TEACHING THE SOUNDS OF THE LETTERS DOES HELP YOUR CHILD LEARN HOW TO READ! Give your child the smart start of learning the sounds of the letters!

RHYTHM

The repetition and rhythm of the words will help your child memorize the sounds of the letters.

VISUAL

The photograph images and colored letters will help your child in learning the letter sounds.

AUDITORY

Children speak all the sounds and words.

Each letter will repeat its sound when touched.

Each photo will say its name when touched.

Most young learners child will enjoy repeating the sounds they hear on this app.

FOCUS

All distracting bells and whistles have been removed to allow your child to focus on the essential skill to be learned here-associating a letter with its most commonly occurring sound using photographs.

A team of educators using accelerated learning techniques and Montessori principles developed this app. It has been tested and used with preschool children. The children loved it and it helped them learn the letter sounds. Please give us your feedback and suggestions.

SENTENCE READING MAGIC

This app helps your child to read words.
This app helps your child to read sentences.
This app helps your child to build sentences.

This app provides the missing link between reading words and reading books-reading sentences.

This app gives emerging readers a step that will encourage skill building and confidence in reading.

Most reading programs go from reading words to reading books, which is a big gap. This app helps to bridge that gap giving emerging readers a gradual and fun step up from reading words. These short sentences are perfect to help children gain confidence in reading sentences.

This app has two modes. The first mode is sentence building where children can move the words into their correct sentence position. The second mode is the reading mode where children can read the words of the phrase or sentence and then check their work by touching the hidden picture.

This app uses mainly short 2 and 3 word sentences, which are punctuated correctly and always begin with a capital letter. This app also uses 2 and 3 word sentence fragments that are useful in the process of giving emerging readers practice in reading strings of words together. These are not complete sentences and therefore, do not begin with a capital letter nor do they have a punctuation mark at the end.

The picture is hidden to encourage word reading instead of "picture reading." Most young readers upon seeing the picture will guess its meaning and not even look at the words. The picture is hidden so that the child will read the words first and then only look at the picture to check their work.

Help your young learner master the most frequently used words in the English language!

SightWords Pro contains a selection of over 1,600+ sight words which comprises up to 85% of the text in a child's early reading materials -- comprehensively compiled from Dolch, Fry, Pinnell-Fountas, UK, and many other high-frequency word lists. Tracing Paper

Tracing Paper is a simple yet elegant universal application for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch that helps you practice and improve your drawing and sketching skills by giving you a blank translucent canvas with a clean and simple grid on which you can trace anything you wish as often as you like. I believe it will be great for anyone who enjoys drawing or for kids that just want to play around!

After choosing a photo from your library you can adjust its size and location under the canvas using your fingers to pinch to rotate/zoom and one finger to drag it around, then you just trace and shade whatever you wish using your finger. If you make a mistake simply choose the eraser tool and erase your mistake (also, you can use the eraser creatively to help add details in ways that are different from simply drawing), or if you want more accuracy than an eraser there is undo/redo support for up to 8 actions. For those hard to see details zoom, rotate or pan the canvas in for further detail by simply pinching the canvas or using two fingers and dragging to move! For those details where we want the colors to really pop there is now support for coloring and changing the pencil size to draw larger or smaller details as needed! For those moments where you want to quickly fill a region, there is now flood fill support, just press the bucket tool and click in an enclosed region to fill in.

After you are done, wow the world and save your masterpiece to your Photo Library or share it via Email, Facebook, Twitter, PDF or even copy to the clipboard or use open-with to open it in compatible programs to touch it up!

Tracing Paper features:
• Super-smooth drawing with proprietary OpenGL-based rendering engine
• 2 pencil styles
• Support for tracing any photo from your device’s photo album
• Gallery mode to browse to create/load/edit your traces

The Digital Problem Solver (DPS) originally appeared in The Social Express™ as a tool for the characters to use to identify emotions and coping strategies. Users quickly requested a real DPS to use outside of the software.

My DPS is a customizable application that enables children to select a feeling and a coping strategy to calm themselves. My DPS features eight feelings including:

•Happy
•Scared
•Sad
•Frustrated

There are four coping strategies which include:

•Use Positive Self-Talk

When a child selects a coping strategy, he/she will then see a Hollywood quality animated video which models how to do the strategy.

SpellDown Spelling Bee

SpellDown is the fun way to create spelling lists and spelling bees. It's perfect for learning SAT words, managing your kid's weekly word lists, or mastering words that just give you trouble.

SpellDown makes it easy to create custom spelling lists. You create your lists with only the words you want. Spelldown will fetch the audio but you can also record using your own voice and add your own definition.

Once you have a list, test yourself using SpellDown's fun spelling bee game or HangBee.

Because you can record your own audio, it's easy to create themed and question based lists (e.g. "What is the capital of Wisconsin?", "Who is Vader's old Jedi master?")

Smile at Me

Smiling can be difficult for many children. Some children – particularly those with autism spectrum issues – may feel uncomfortable and resist smiling when it is appropriate. They may also smile when it is inappropriate to do so. Some children also have difficulty interpreting the social cues that signal when a smile is or is not appropriate. "Smile at Me" provides quick, repeated practice in interpreting these social cues, and rewards children for practicing appropriate smiling.

The game is simple. The player is asked to hold the iPhone or iPod Touch like a mirror – so that he can see his mouth reflected in the glass. He is then shown a picture. The picture may call for a smile – for example, a girl waving. Or the picture may not call for a smile – for example, a boy fallen from his bicycle. The player is asked to form his mouth into the correct shape – to smile or not to smile – based on the picture. The picture dims every few seconds to allow the player to view his own reflection and monitor his mouth's shape. The player is asked to compare his mouth's reflection with two images - one showing a child's smile, the other showing a child's unsmiling mouth – and touch the image that matches his mouth. If the player is correct, he is rewarded with a star; if not, he is given further verbal support to interpret the pictures and respond appropriately. After four stars, the player gets to visit a virtual zoo, interacting with animated animals – and practicing more social skills with a virtual friend!

Our hope is that through practice children can become self-analytical as they learn to look at and evaluate their own facial expressions. At first, children may need parental support to interpret the pictures and determine if a smile is appropriate or not. But over time the goal is to gradually withdraw such support so that children can move toward independence.

We believe children can build up tolerance for uncomfortable social skills through repeated practice. We believe this is especially important in basic social situations such as initial greetings and smiling. In fact, even if children have difficulty socializing, simply smiling and greeting appropriately can help them better fit into a typical social context. And we know from our years of teaching experience that social skills can benefit a child's self-esteem.

We have many years of close personal experience with children who have Asperger's Syndrome and we believe smiling is a cultural norm that can be learned with practice. But we also respect parents who disagree.

We want the children we work with to approximate typical social behaviors as much as possible, and we know there are many other parents who feel the same. Because our culture values smiling in social interactions we want to help children foster this skill – and what better way than with a motivating game! Of course, we can make no guarantees that practicing with a game will affect real behavior. But if you share our perspective, give "Smile at Me" a try – and let us know what you think!

Scene Builder - Car Mechanic

Does your creative child crave more imaginative games? … OR… Does your child need more practice with creativity?

Imagination and creativity. As experienced classroom teachers, we believe creative, open-ended play is an essential part of learning. Some children are already strong in creativity and need an iPhone/iPod touch game that will exercise their imagination instead of just their thumbs. “Scene Builder” is for them.

Other children need more practice being creative and flexible. We know that some children struggle with imaginary play – whether they’re on the spectrum or not. “Scene Builder” gives these children a chance to practice creative and imaginary play – instead of just trying to beat the next level.

“Scene Builder” came out of our years of observing children – some gifted, some on the spectrum, some both – and noting that many preferred games that involved creating and building rather than defeating enemies. Please let us know how your child responds to the game - and what you think!

“Scene Builder – Car Mechanic” allows kids to create scenes in five different rooms of a virtual Mechanic’s shop. Children select props from a warehouse, then rotate, enlarge or shrink them, and position them to create cool scenes. Kids can take snapshots of their creations and view them in the game's Photo Gallery or on the iPhone's camera roll. At the end of the session, the player's current game is saved so he can continue where he left off next time. A creative and imaginative way to spend some spare time!

Look in My Eyes: Steam Train

Do you have a young train lover who needs practice with eye contact? Look in My Eyes: Steam Train allows young learners to practice eye contact while earning rides as the engineers of their own steam trains!

This is not a competitive game, there are no points to win or lose. Instead, it is an engaging virtual world to play in and explore! Young engineers can play with their train from a distance, adjusting signal flags, lights, whistles, and bells while making fun deliveries to exotic locations such as the Great Wall of China, Mt. Rushmore, the pyramids of Egypt and others.

Or they can go inside the engine room to control the throttle, brakes, whistle, bell and more! Young engineers can go back to the tender in order to fill up with coal and water. Then they can turn to the front and shovel coal into the firebox, adjust their steam pressure and water level, try different real train whistles, and shoo cows off the tracks!

A noncompetitive and highly engaging activity to entertain a budding train engineer!

NOTE: Includes extensive animation which may perform very slowly on older phones or older iPod touch devices.

Hidden Curriculum for Kids

Some people seem to learn the hidden curriculum almost automatically. Others learn it only by direct instruction. This includes children with autism spectrum disorders. These real-life based entries spur conversations about the countless “unwritten social rules” that we encounter every day and that can cause confusion and anxiety.

Look In My Eyes 2 Car Mechanic

Eye contact is an important social skill that some children find challenging. “Look in My Eyes” helps them practice this skill - while earning fun rewards and playing creatively. It was designed for children on the autism spectrum - especially those with Asperger’s Syndrome - but any child who has difficulties with eye contact may benefit from playing.

The game rewards players for quickly focusing in on a person’s eyes. Through repeated practice we attempt to develop a habit that families can transfer to real life settings as they remind children to use the skills they have practiced in the game.

How do you play? Children look at a series of faces, and need to focus on the eyes quickly in order to answer correctly and earn points. The game makes repeated practice fun as children use the points they earn to buy items for their own virtual world - in this case a car repair shop, complete with 5 different rooms. Numerous items - such as cars, repair tools, and other auto products - can be rotated, enlarged, shrunk and positioned to create cool scenes. Kids can take snapshots of their creations and view them in the game's Photo Gallery, the iPhone’s Camera Roll or the iPod touch’s Saved Photos.

The game’s unique reward system grew out of our decades of classroom teaching experience, observing what motivates young learners. We have combined that experience with our extensive training in best education practices and our many years of close personal relationships with children who have Asperger’s Syndrome and autism to create a social skills game we hope will benefit your child!

AutismXpress

The ‘Autism Xpress’has been created to help promote greater awareness about autism spectrum disorders. It is designed to encourage people with autism to recognizes and express their emotions through its fun and easy to use interface.

Autism is a lifelong disability that affects the way a person communicates and relates to other people and the world around them. Those affected typically display major impairments in three areas: social interaction, communication and behavior (restricted interests and repetitive behaviors).

Part of the reason for creating ‘Autism Xpress’ is that People with autism have trouble interpreting emotions and understanding what different facial expressions may represent.

1 in 160 children have autism in some form, making it twice as common as cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy, childhood deafness or blindness and ten times more common than childhood leukemia. Despite the prevalence of this condition, for which there is no cure, awareness and access to appropriate services remains remarkably low.

We hope you enjoy this fun application.

Beautiful Bubbles

Pop beautiful bubbles with your fingers using multi-touch.

Unlike other bubble popping apps, this one has 2 modes:

A free mode where you can pop as many bubbles as you like for as long as you like, the bubbles float around the screen and as you pop them more appear. You don't have to touch the screen to create them they appear automatically.

A challenge mode where you have to pop 50 bubbles as quickly as you can. Don't miss though, or you'll lose points.

This app is perfect for young children who are developing fine motor skills. They can swipe across the screen in free mode and pop all the bubbles their fingers come into contact with. This is very important for small fingers as they can't always connect with the bubbles directly.

It is also perfect for people with some forms of autism, the gentle floating of bubbles and the popping sound and animation will help to keep them focussed.

The challenge mode is perfect for adults who want to waste some time and try and beat their previous score.

Press the back button at any time, and when you see the second back button appear press that at the same time to get back to the menu. This avoids accidentally ending your game.
